Click to EnlargeDating back to 1862, St. Joseph Church is Corunna is one of only three wooden churches remaining in the London Diocese. Initially build in Mooretown in 1837, the church moved to Corunna in the 1860's. The great domed ceiling provided heavenly echoes to the ancestors of Corunna and Mooretown and the over 700 families that currently belong to the parish. "You can tear down and rebuild, but you can't get the atmosphere that you have with a church that is over a hundred years old", say Debby Winterton, church secretary.

The first order of business in the renovations of St. Joseph's was to literally raise the church and pour a new foundation. This began the almost $900,000 project. The existing balcony was enlarged, a new Narthex was build, and a basement was also added under the new Narthex expansion as a new home for the Children's Liturgy (Sunday School). Great care was taken in removing older leaded paint and a new color scheme was implemented. Father Dikran Islemeci and the congregation chose to brighten things up by choosing pale greens and beige for the walls, ceilings, new carpets and flooring. The church had already begun to replace eighteen of the age-worn stained glass windows. At a price of $3,500 each, all but two had been donated by parishioners and rededicated by the church in the seven months since the campaign began.

When the church was moved in 1862, as was the custom of the time, the occupants of the cemetery were also moved and buried below the new location. Renovations, beginning in July of 1998, confirmed this custom when humans remains were found under the foundation. As 20th century law had to deal with the practices of the mid-19th century, the OPP moved in and declared the area a crime scene. While the camera crews and local police managed to create a great deal of excitement in the small town of Corunna, the project was only delayed a few days.

The entire project needs to raise an estimated $345,000 to cover the cost of the renovations. Thus began Arts and Crafts 2000. Won't you please join us on May 31, 2009 for the 10th Annual Arts and Crafts 2000 Show in Corunna Athletic Park.

We hope to see you there!
